These days everyone and their brother are on some sort of social media site talking about everything from their children to their latest doctor’s visit (TMI if you ask me). Heck, you have grandmas and grandpas who have a social media profile.
If that isn’t an indication on how well known social media has gotten, then perhaps you’re living in a cave.
Seriously, because their are a lot of people using social media you too can use this medium as a perfect source to assist you in your home business. Why not, it’s a free tool to use.
In fact, we’ve seen a higher rate of network marketers leveraging this tool. They have 1,000s of friends and are making more friends everyday.
That’s what’s all it about, right? Get as many friends as possible!
Well, not really. Sure you want to be able to make as many friends as possible, but what network marketers are missing is it’s not just about making friends.
It’s about making a personal connection with the people in your friends list.
Let’s say you have 2,000 friends and out of that number maybe you’re only dealing with a handful. You regularly connect with them, meaning you talk to them via social media, building rapport.
Isn’t it safe to say that the others don’t even matter? It’s true!
The others are just sitting in your network not even taking notice of what you do because you failed to connect with them one on one.
You haven’t taken the initiative to make a direct connection with them.
If your intention is to build a leads list from social media then the only way someone is going to even consider looking into what you have to offer is if there is trust built.
And, without making a personal connection with them, it will not result in a lead for you.
Here’s a guide to using social media, specifically with Facebook, but the same goes true when using other social media sites like Twitter, MySpace, etc.
- When connecting to a friend, learn more about them by asking them questions like, “what challenges are you faced with this year that you seriously want to overcome that I can help you with?” Take the time to be an authentic version of you. It’s just like if you went to a party and introduced yourself. You tell them a little bit about and you learn about them. Then see how you can help them by throwing out there an attractive question.
- While posting your updates and status, consider taking the approach as Mike Klingler says, “self-promotional”. What this means is you let your audience know what you do and how different you are from everyone else. In the below screen shot is an example I posted regarding an encounter I had. It says I’m normal and I experience the same things as everyone else. It also has that “different” factor. It tells people what I do and why I do it. That my friend is a very attractable trait. That’s what will separate you from everyone else.
- When comments or private messages are sent directly to you, be sure you respond by commenting along showing your authentic side. Create an open dialogue between you and them. It’s just another way for you to say I’m hear to connect with you. It’s also another attractable characteristic.
- When posting your notes or uploading your blog to your profile, encourage your audience to participate by commenting on your posts. By letting them know it’s an open forum, more people will post their comments. This is your time to make that connection with them.
Connect with me on Facebook and check out my wall, you’ll start to get a feel for what I am truly talking about.
You’ll see that there are personal conversations going on. What is happening here is I’m building rapport. It doesn’t matter what you’re talking about either. Just make sure what you are talking about includes you giving out value.
Remember, if you have the trust built because you took the effort to personally connect with them, they’ll be more inclined to join your list. You’ll be attracting them because of your approach, which is ideal.
Social media is not difficult to use, but using it to build your business will require you to think before you act. This will certainly serve you though. Not only does it provide value to your audience but it also allows you to put out there your heart and soul.
You never know, what you put out there can be the deciding factor to attract your next diamond. Do you agree with this approach?
What do you think about social media? Is it a great way to build your home business or a complete waste of your time? I once thought it was until I grasped this concept.

The best to describe how to use social media is to just be “you”. Don’t be something that you’re not.
Social media marketing is a great way to build a home business, if you know the right things to do.

Hi Jen,
Glad to hear from ya.
If you want to leverage how truly valuable of a tool this is, yes you do need to just be “you”.

I am new to social media and trying it out with my MLM.
Where do you think is the best spot to start?

It really depends on what you are after.
Whatever tool you do choose, like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace… building relationships is huge.
Hope that helps.
